Context Is King: 2 Exercises

We will look at two passages to practice our interpretation of verses within their immediate contexts. At a later date, we will learn about studying passages in their broader contexts.

So for now, 2 Interpration Exercises:

IE # 1

What is the significance of Ephesians 3:20-21? Why is it so important for Paul to use all those big words for God's power?

IE # 2

What is the significance of 1 Thessalonians 5:24? Does it apply to anything we feel "called" to? Just what is "it" that he who calls you will do?

You're right, Steve. God's awesome power is definitely a reason for worship.

A further question, now. Often we use these verses to apply to any prayer request that we might have (and that's not necessarily wrong, since God is all-powerful). My question is this: is this text talking about a particular purpose that God intends to fulfill?

If so, what is that purpose? I think the answer will reveal to us why Paul thought he needed to blow us away at the awesome power of God. And it is an answer that should inspire faith in us.

Thanks for being the first to respond to this post. This kind of interaction is exactly what I hope will become a staple of this site.

Grace and Peace.

I think that God is trying to show us that his power is so great, that being used through us He can work things beyond our comprehension. When we are having this sort of faith then is God given the true glory and honor that he deserves. I think maybe Paul was trying to get us to come to grips with God's awesome power. When we see what God can do through us, that should give us more faith.
